Employment decline and consumption decline for people in their 40s
The number of employed people in their 40s has decreased for 41 consecutive months, and their share of the total employed has reached its lowest point in 30 years, and the gap with the share of employed people in their 50s is widening.
The growth rate of consumer spending among households in their 40s also fell to the lowest level in nine quarters, and this, combined with the burden of household debt repayment, shows a tendency to reduce spending.
It is analyzed that this decline in employment for people in their 40s is influenced by a complex of factors, including population decline, sluggish employment in the manufacturing industry, and lowering of the voluntary retirement age at large companies due to the introduction of AI and management efficiency.
