Regarding the controversial Hwandangogi, all three major historical institutions in Korea expressed their opinion that the document in question was a forgery (fake history book).

Looking at the evaluations of Hwandan Gogi by the three major historical institutions, including the National Historical Compilation Commission, the Northeast Asian History Foundation, and the Academy of Korean Studies, obtained by Il Newsis, all three organizations responded to the effect that Hwandan Gogi is a forgery.

The National Historical Compilation Committee said, “In order to determine the historical and academic value of a specific document, history carries out a process called source criticism, which verifies the process by which the document was created and the contents contained in the document,” and “As a result of the several times of criticism of the source material on Hwandangogi, the general opinion of the historical community is that this book is a forgery.”

The Northeast Asian History Foundation also said, “Hwandan Gogi is a collection of books by a person named Gye Yeon-su that tells the history of our ancient times.

“It is a forgery that has been proven through academic research to have been created by Yu-Rip Lee in 1982,” he said.

The Academy of Korean Studies did not directly mention that it was a ‘falsified document’, but said, “The process of transmission of the included historical materials is unclear, and the contents differ from existing historical materials, making historical verification difficult, so the general view in academia is that it is difficult to view them as reliable materials.”

The National Historical Compilation Committee and the Northeast Asian History Foundation provided additional evidence that Hwandangogi is a forgery.

The National Historical Compilation Committee said, “”Historical academia points out that many of the contents contained in this book are not cross-verified with other historical works of the same period,” and “”Historical academia also points out that it is difficult to say that Hwandan Gogi was based on historical books written before the modern era, given that terms established after the modern era, such as nation and humanity, appear. Also, Lee Yu-rip published this book.

“It is also pointed out that no records of Hwandangogi have been confirmed before 2012,” he said.

In the case of the Northeast Asian History Foundation, it warned of the harmful effects of acknowledging Hwandan Gogi as a history book. The Northeast Asian History Foundation explained, “If ancient history created on the basis of fabricated data is accepted as another opinion, there is a risk that Korean history research will be ignored internationally as it has an irrational research trend in the global era, leading to the side effect of isolation of Korean history research internationally.”

Additionally, all three organizations stated that they have never reviewed or researched Hwandan meat and have no plans to do so in the future.

According to the Northeast Asian History Foundation, Hwandangogi is a literature that combines four books, including Samseonggi, Dangunsegi, Bubu Yeogi, and Taebaek Ilsa.

In 1988, Gye Yeon-su bound four books and compiled them into Hwandan Gogi, and gave them to Lee Yu-rip.

In Hwandangogi, the starting stage of Korean history is set not on the Korean Peninsula but on the Chinese mainland or Central Asia, and the names of countries that are not in existing history books, such as Hwanguk or Baedalguk, are used.

A list of the great Dangun kings appears. In addition, there are errors in place names and terms and concepts that were not used in pre-modern East Asia, so the academic world views it as a forgery.
