Youngcheol Lee, who ran ‘Youngcheol Burger’, which was considered a Korea University specialty, has passed away. He was 58 years old.

Mr. Lee died on the 13th. It is known that Mr. Lee has been suffering from lung cancer. The funeral was set up at the funeral hall of Korea University Hospital in Anam-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul.

Mr. Lee is a person who gained fame by running ‘Youngcheol Burger’, which sells 1,000 won hamburgers in front of Korea University. Starting as a street vendor in 2002, it made a name for itself with its ‘1,000 Won Burger’ and earned the title ‘ancient specialty.’ However, due to the failure of the 2009 luxury strategy, it closed in June 2015.

After the store closed, Korea University students who knew Lee gathered together to raise funds to revive Yeongcheol Burger. About 2,600 people participated in the crowdfunding campaign, raising 20 million won in one day and 70 million won in two weeks, attracting attention once again. The money delivered to CEO Lee Young-cheol was used as seed money for the revival of Young-cheol Burger, including store deposits.

The reason Korea University students raised money for Youngcheol Burger was because Mr. Lee had donated 20 million won annually to the ‘Youngcheol Scholarship.’ It is known that free hamburgers were also provided during school festivals.

After the news of Mr. Lee’s death became known, a wave of condolences continued from Korea University clubs and alumni, including Choi Seung-don, a KBS announcer who graduated from Korea University’s English Education Department.
