Constitution Day, July 17, is designated as a public holiday again for the first time in 18 years.

According to News 1 on the 27th, the National Assembly Public Administration and Security Committee held a plenary meeting at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul on this day and decided on an amendment to the ‘Act on Public Holidays’ (Public Holidays Act) containing the above contents.

Constitution Day is a day commemorating the promulgation of the Constitution of the Republic of Korea on July 17, 1948. Among the five major national holidays (March 1st Independence Movement Day, Constitution Day, Liberation Day, Foundation Day, and Hangeul Day), Constitution Day is the only day that is not a public holiday. Constitution Day has been excluded from public holidays since 2008 as the ‘Regulations on Public Holidays for Government Offices’ were revised in 2005. If the amendment passes the plenary session of the National Assembly after passing the plenary session of the Public Administration and Security Committee, the Constitution Day public holiday will be revived next year for the first time in 18 years since 2008.
