It has been reported that Park Gyu-baek (Navy Vice Admiral), dean of the Naval Academy, requested an exclusive tea time with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who is scheduled to attend the 139th Navy and Marine Corps Cadet Commissioning Ceremony to be held on the 28th, but Samsung, concerned about a dispute over preferential treatment, reportedly refused.

According to the Seoul Economic Daily report on the 27th, the Naval Academy learned that Chairman Lee Ji-ho, the eldest son of Lee Ji-ho, who renounced his U.S. citizenship and enlisted as a naval officer, would attend the commissioning ceremony by putting his name on the family list, and requested Samsung to have an exclusive tea time with Chairman Lee.

However, Samsung’s position is that Chairman Lee is attending as a parent to congratulate his eldest son on his commission as a naval officer. In particular, it is said that the tea time request was politely declined due to the judgment that it could lead to controversy over preferential treatment.

A military source said, “The recently inaugurated head of the Naval Academy tried to prepare several additional events that had not previously been held upon hearing that Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong would be attending. I understand that the Chief of Naval Staff, who was briefed on this, ordered that all events that could lead to controversy over preferential treatment related to Samsung be held, saying that it was a serious time.”

Some are already raising suspicions that the Navy may have been considerate of Samsung.
