It was confirmed that Sungshin Women’s University filed a police complaint against students who staged a lacquering protest last year for opposing the admission of male students.

Seoul Seongbuk Police Station announced on the 24th that it is investigating the students after receiving a complaint from Sungshin Women’s University on charges of damage to property.

According to Edaily’s coverage on this day, it was determined that there were at least three students who were subject to police investigation. The police began an investigation based on a complaint received from the school in April of this year, including a third-party complaint during the incident in November of last year. Afterwards, it was confirmed that the suspect was identified by analyzing closed circuit (CC) TV.

These students are suspected of lacquering buildings and floors inside the Sungshin Women’s University campus in Donam-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul in November last year. They held this protest to oppose the new admission guidelines for special admission for foreigners for the 2025 school year, which includes the content that ‘all genders can apply, regardless of gender, only for the Department of International Studies.’

At the time, when protests against co-education spread among students, the school explained that it was not accepting male students for conversion to engineering.

Currently, most of the traces of the protests have been restored on the Sungshin Women’s University campus. Last August, the school issued a notice saying, “Although we focused on cleaning work instead of replacing damaged facilities to save budget, a cost of approximately 400 million won was spent.”

A police official said, “We are currently at the stage of requesting the suspects to appear.” The school said, “We have no position on the matter as it is under investigation.”
