The ‘most expensive book’ in comic book history was born in the attic of an ordinary house in Northern California.

Three brothers who were sorting through boxes left behind by their deceased mother discovered the 1939 version of Superman No. 1.

The evaluation results were shocking. Exclusively rated 9.0, the highest quality available today.

At the end of 2024, the brothers discovered an old box while clearing out a pile of old newspapers.

When my mother was alive, she said, “There’s an old comic book somewhere,” but the whole family thought it was a joke.

However, when I opened the box, the first issue of the Superman solo series was revealed.

Professional organization CGC inspected the book and gave it a rare grade of 9.0. This is the only copy in the world in the highest state of preservation, and the industry has evaluated it as “a virtually miraculous discovery.”

The brothers put the book up for auction, and on November 20, 2025, the final winning bid was $9,120,000 (about 13.4 billion won) at Heritage Auctions in the United States.

This is the highest price for a comic book ever, easily surpassing the previous record. The auction house said, “This is not just a comic book, but something like the bible of American pop culture.”
