Kim Jong-un issued a secret order banning suicide, defining it as “an act of treason against socialism.” This order follows reports of a sharp increase in suicide cases, which South Korean intelligence agencies estimate has increased by about 40% compared to the previous year. Local government officials are held accountable if they fail to prevent suicide in their area.
Recently, the regime has further strengthened this policy, imposing the death penalty on anyone who attempts suicide and survives. These harsh measures reflect a worsening economic crisis, widespread poverty and starvation, which are cited as key causes of the increase in suicides.
