On the 5th, the Criminal Division 1 of the Jeonju Trial Division of the Gwangju High Court (Director Yang Jin-soo) sentenced a man, A (28), to three years in prison and a woman, B (27), to three years and six months in prison on charges of special assault and labor exploitation and theft.
The couple, who were married, divorced after the incident and each took the defendant’s stand with different lawyers. Mr. A’s sentence was upheld in the appeal trial, and Mr. B’s sentence was reduced by 6 months from the 4 years in prison in the first trial.
Mr. A and Mr. B, who were a married couple, were previously indicted on charges of repeatedly assaulting Mr. C, who has an intellectual disability, with fists, feet, and farming tools, and exploiting his labor between February 2021 and February 2022.
Mr. C was forced to work as a delivery worker because he could not endure their repeated assaults. In addition, Mr. A and Mr. B stole 27 million won in wages that Mr. C received from the delivery company and 3 million won in social security benefits paid in his name and used them for living expenses.
It was revealed that they committed this crime after bringing Mr. C, who had no family, to their home by urging them to “take good care of him.”
The appellate court pointed out, “The defendants took the victim, treated her like a slave, made her get a motorbike license, and even extorted her delivery wages. They even made her do housework, and when she ran away, they chased after her and kidnapped her.”
“However, the defendants reflected on their crimes during the trial and reached an amicable agreement with the victims,” the ruling continued. “The sentences were decided in consideration of the fact that the defendants’ families petitioned for leniency.”
