Hip amnesia refers to a condition where the buttock muscles become weak due to sitting for a long time or lack of exercise, so they cannot function properly and forget how to apply strength. It is also called ‘dead butt syndrome’, ‘gluteus inhibition syndrome’, and ‘gluteus maximus/hamstring control disorder’.
Pelvic muscle exercises help prevent hip amnesia. Pelvic muscle exercise is an exercise that pulls the anus upward and tightens it, counting slowly from 1 to 5 and then releasing the force.
If there is no strength in your hips when you lift your legs while lying on your stomach, or if only your lower back is tense and your hips do not respond when you tilt your upper body, it is likely that your hip function has decreased. In addition, hip amnesia can be confirmed through ‘surface electromyography’ (EMG) or ultrasound imaging.
