1. The late Kim Ju-sik, the father of Mr. Kim Gyu-jeong (currently in his 80s) who lives in Yecheon-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, saved every penny he had through hard labor in Japan in 1910 and returned to Korea in 1945, 35 years later, upon liberation.

2. He deposited approximately 12,220 yen collected in Japan at the Yecheon-gun branch of Choheung Bank in 1946 and received a cash deposit certificate.

3. The cash deposit certificate certifies that on March 5, 1946, branch manager Park Jong-seon of the Pungcheon branch of Choheung Bank received and stored 12,220 yen in Japanese money from Mr. Kim Ju-sik, who lived in Miho-dong, Bomun-myeon, Yecheon-gun. It also states that Mr. Kim’s signature, Choheung Bank’s official seal, and other persons cannot infringe upon the ownership.

4. When I went to retrieve it right after the Korean War, a lot of data was lost and the bank delayed payment every day, and during the time of President Park Chung-hee, foreign currency was needed for economic development, so it was difficult to withdraw yen. The deceased Mr. Kim tried in many ways to recover the money he had worked hard to save, but was unable to achieve his goal and passed away in 1969.

5. When Mr. Kim Gyu-jeong, the son of the deceased Mr. Kim, visited the bank during the Chun Doo-hwan era and requested a withdrawal, the bank said that the amount was high and needed permission from the Treasury, but in the end, the withdrawal was refused, saying that the authenticity of the cash deposit certificate could not be confirmed.

6. The value of the money entrusted to Mr. Kim is estimated to be 4 to 7 billion won in current value, considering the exchange rate, inflation, currency reform, etc. at the time, and is estimated to be well over 10 billion won when including 76 years of bank interest.
