A military official explained, “The submarine hull technology has already been secured, all we have to do is increase the size. Regarding the nuclear reactor, the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute has studied a lot of commercial nuclear reactors and has also studied the small modular reactor (SMR) system, so there is no reason why it cannot be done, but it will take time.”
However, it is known that even if a small nuclear reactor is developed, the consent of the United States is required to mount it on a nuclear-powered submarine.
The biggest problem at this point is securing enriched uranium, which is used as fuel for small nuclear reactors (see below).
