[Economist Reporter Ji-wan Lee] While it was belatedly known that a worker in his 20s at the London Bagel Museum died last July, the company explained the ‘suspicion of death from overwork.’

LBM, the operator of the London Bagel Museum, said in an official statement on the 28th, “We are very sorry about what happened to the deceased,” and “We would like to correct some of the untrue content.”

Previously, on the 22nd, the bereaved family of Mr. A, who died in the staff quarters of the London Bagel Museum Incheon branch, applied for an industrial accident related to Mr. A to the Gyeongin Regional Headquarters of the Korea Workers’ Compensation and Welfare Service.

It is said that Mr. A, who was a healthy young man, suffered from extreme work burden due to the simultaneous preparation and operation of a new branch. According to the bereaved family, the deceased, Mr. A, worked for about 80 hours and 12 minutes a week before his death.

In addition, the bereaved family said that the circumstances in which Mr. A continued to work without eating from 8:58 a.m. to 11:54 p.m. the day before his death were revealed in a KakaoTalk conversation with his girlfriend.

In response to this, LBM explained, “Our store management employees work 8 hours a day and 9 hours a day,” and “all employees have 8 days off per month.”

He added, “We cannot completely rule out the possibility that there was overtime work that the headquarters was not aware of due to the busy situation ahead of the store opening during the relevant period. However, we cannot understand the bereaved family’s claim that overtime work was done up to 80 hours a week.”

According to the company, Mr. A joined the company in May last year (2024) and applied for overtime work a total of 7 times (a total of 9 hours) over a period of about 13 months. Based on this, the average weekly working hours of Mr. A, as determined by the company, are 44.1 hours. The company explains that this is similar to the average working hours of all employees (43.5 hours a week).

However, LBM said it could not confirm Mr. A’s exact working hours. The reason is that there was an error in the employee entry/exit management system.

LBM said, “We installed a fingerprint reader that manages entry and exit using a security company’s program on July 7, but we confirmed an error in the fingerprint reader during the first use on the day the store opened. Therefore, unfortunately, we were unable to check the deceased’s work record through the fingerprint reader.”

Next, LBM said, “If an investigation by the Labor Office or other agencies comes out in the future, we plan to clarify the facts and faithfully participate in the investigation. In addition, to prevent the same incident from recurring, we plan to strengthen our internal management system, including mandatory attendance management records for all employees, and provide training for all employees.”
