U.S. Marine Corps Captain Ted Williams

Williams, considered one of the greatest hitters in MLB history, served as a fighter flight instructor in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II and participated in the Korean War in 1952.

He flew the F9F Panther fighter jet and flew 39 sorties, and among his fellow pilots was John Glenn, who would later become an astronaut.

He was no longer a ‘400 hitter’ as he held the control stick instead of the bat.

Instead, he risked his life to perform flight operations and went to bomb Pyongyang, crossing the line of fire to the point where he was almost shot down by anti-aircraft artillery.

Although his career as a baseball player suffered significant losses due to his military service, Williams said several times during his lifetime that he had “absolutely no regrets.”
