Government seeks to recover ‘Cambodia’s crime proceeds’ domestically

The government is pursuing a plan to return to the country the proceeds of local crimes generated from crimes committed in Cambodia.

When the Ministry of Justice requests Cambodia to identify crime victims and the amount of damage through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a method of bringing them back to Korea through the Cambodian authorities’ investigation and recovery process is being considered.

According to the International Criminal Justice Mutual Assistance Convention, if the victim is in the country and the amount of damage is specified, he or she may request recovery of the proceeds of the crime even if the crime occurred overseas.

Korea signed an international criminal legal assistance treaty with Cambodia in 2019, which came into effect in 2021.
