Among the 1915 graduates of the U.S. Army’s West Post Military Academy, the so-called Riders of the Stars, Van Fleet was denied a promotion for a long time despite his outstanding abilities because Marshall mistook him for a drunkard of a similar name.

It was a rare mistake by Marshall, who is called the god of military administration, and when the truth was revealed, Van Fleet, who had been a colonel until Normandy in 1944, was quickly promoted to commander of the 3rd Corps, the front-line corps, in March 1945.

He also showed his ability in the Korean War, thanks to the Van Fleet ammunition strategy he invented.

This tactic, which made virtually unlimited artillery bombardment possible by increasing the ammunition control supply rate by five times, effectively nullified the Chinese army’s human-in-the-middle strategy.
