President-elect Donald Trump said Saturday in a phone interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press” host Christine Welker that he would “probably” grant a 90-day extension to suspend a potential ban on TikTok in the U.S. after he takes office Monday.
Trump has not yet made a final decision, but is considering extending for another 90 days the existing deadline under which TikTok’s China-based parent company (ByteDance) must sell to a non-Chinese company by Sunday’s deadline or face being banned from the United States. He said he was doing it.
“I think that’s definitely an option we could consider. A 90-day extension is very likely. I think it’s appropriate. You need to look at the situation carefully. “This is a very important issue.”
“If we decide to do so, we will announce it on Monday,” he added.

Trump’s support for TikTok is a significant change from his stance during his first term, when he signed an executive order banning not only TikTok but also WeChat, a Chinese messaging app. At the time, Trump’s attempt was blocked by the court. This change in stance reportedly came after he briefly met with one of TikTok’s American billionaire investors last year.
On Friday, the Supreme Court upheld the bill, rejecting TikTok’s free speech claims without signatures or objections.
Before the Supreme Court’s decision, Trump petitioned the court to temporarily suspend enforcement of the law and give him time to come up with an alternative to banning the app.
After Friday’s Supreme Court decision, Trump told Truth Social, “The Supreme Court’s decision was expected and everyone should respect it. My decision on TikTok will be made soon, but I need time to review the situation. “Please stay tuned!” he wrote.
In the past, Trump has hinted at the need to allow TikTok use in the U.S., noting that his TikTok accounts have high views.
TikTok CEO Shou Zi-chu is scheduled to attend President Trump’s inauguration ceremony on Monday along with other tech industry executives.
