This is the first execution by Taiwanese authorities since the launch of the Lai Ching-de government in May last year, and the first in 4 years and 9 months since April 2020.
Mr. Hwang, who was dissatisfied with the pressure to repay the 200,000 Taiwanese dollars (approximately 8.38 million won) he stole from his ex-girlfriend Ms. Wang in October 2013 while he was serving in the military, killed Ms. Wang’s mother and Ms. Wang one by one, and was sentenced to death in July 2017.
