Lim Jun-hee, the principal of Munhwa High School, announced on the 16th, “We are establishing a ‘multiple textbook use school (MTS)’ policy that will use two textbooks for the first time in the country as certified and recognized Korean history textbooks that will be used starting with new students next year.” Principal Lim said, “We have adopted a Korean history textbook written from a conservative perspective as the first-year high school textbook next year, but considering that the goal of history education at the secondary education level is to form a balanced and correct historical consciousness, we have selected one more textbook published from a left-wing perspective. “I will use it as a supplementary textbook,” he said. He emphasized, “By using multiple textbooks, we will prevent illegal and unfair academic interference and infringement on teaching rights by political ideological forces surrounding the selection of Korean history textbooks, resolve unnecessary concerns of parents, and ensure that the school’s complete educational activities are protected.”
Among the nine types of Korean history textbooks, this school was the only one to adopt a conservative textbook published by the publisher ‘Korea Student Assessment Service.’ Then, some civil society groups, including the Gyeongbuk branch of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union, have been protesting in front of schools during school start times since last month, demanding the withdrawal of textbook adoption. The school has reported this group to the Gyeongbuk Office of Education for violating school rights.
According to the school, supplementary textbooks will be selected by the teacher in charge and will be provided to 150 first-year students next year. The price of textbooks is 10,000 won per book, which is borne by the school. On the 17th, the school will also hold an event to reveal all nine types of Korean history textbooks so that parents can directly compare them and present their opinions on the pros and cons of each textbook.
