Highly contagious and alcohol-resistant virus outbreak reported in several regions of China
Norovirus outbreaks have recently occurred in several regions of China, and infections have been spreading since October of this year.
Although generally anyone can be infected with the virus, many students, including three classes at Jangwangu Elementary School, were affected and classes were held online.
Other students at other schools experienced symptoms such as vomiting and abdominal pain, which were later confirmed to be norovirus. In this case, 18 students were infected with the virus.
In another isolated case, a kindergarten student in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, also had vomiting and diarrhea, and 48 children tested positive for norovirus.

Official guidance on norovirus disinfection has been published.
According to China’s National Center for Disease Prevention and Control, acute infectious diseases caused by norovirus have reached their peak.
In response, the organization issued guidance reminding people about the contagious virus and emphasizing that norovirus is highly resistant to commonly used disinfectants. Alcohol has also been found to be ineffective for this.
“It takes a long time to detoxify and provides short-term immune protection, meaning crowded places such as schools are vulnerable to diarrheal outbreaks caused by norovirus.”
Therefore, the guidance urged infected people to isolate immediately.
As a precaution, it is recommended that everyone wash their hands properly with soap and for at least 20 seconds before eating, after a bowel movement, and before handling food that must be fully cooked before consumption. It is also recommended to periodically disinfect frequently touched areas using a chlorine-based disinfectant.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also reminded people not to go to work if they are infected with the virus and to seek medical help immediately.
