The investigation into the death of a man in his 30s who sponsored a female BJ (internet broadcast host) a large sum of money is experiencing difficulties. The man’s bereaved family claimed ‘manipulated broadcasting’ last year and sued the BJ and broadcasting officials for fraud, but the key reference, a broadcasting official, did not respond to the investigation. It was discovered that this official even received money from the bereaved family under the pretext of cooperating with the investigation.

Dead man donates up to 50 million won per day to BJ

As a result of Sisa Journal’s coverage, the bereaved family of Mr. A, a man in his 30s, filed a police complaint against BJ manager Mr. Ko Amugae for fraud last October. Mr. Ko is a key reference to support the suspicion of ‘manipulated broadcasting’. He hinted at cooperation with the investigation and repeatedly requested financial support from the bereaved family. He also said, “I will repay the money,” citing living expenses and other reasons. It is reported that the amount given to Mr. Go by the bereaved family amounted to 10 million won from last year to this year.

Mr. Ko is known to be the manager of the ‘Excel Broadcasting’ cast in which Mr. A participated. Excel Broadcasting came from the meaning of listing BJs’ names as if organizing them in ‘Excel’. In fact, this place was run in a competitive manner. The ranks of guest BJs who appear on the show and whether they are expelled are determined by the ‘star balloons (donation)’ they receive. The donations that BJs receive in real time were exposed on broadcast. The idea is to get viewers to donate more money to the BJs they support.

Mr. A was known here as a ‘big donor’ who sponsored BJ up to 50 million won per day. But in reality, he was an ordinary office worker. It turns out that he even took out a loan to raise donations. He was found dead in his car in May last year.

The key reference, BJ Manager, has not responded to the investigation for three months.

Suspicions of manipulated broadcasting arose later. The key point is that the ranking of female BJs was predetermined. Here’s how: BJs first send donations to themselves through their managers or third-party accounts. The status of these donations was broadcast in real time. The channel operator, surnamed Park, knew this but tolerated it. This is to encourage competition among BJ fans and encourage them to give donations to BJ fans who are at risk of being eliminated.

In relation to this, suspicions were raised that female BJs routinely entertain and manage high-value sponsors. Ultimately, the bereaved family sued Mr. Park and two female BJs for fraud last February. This is because they took advantage by deceiving viewers. A charge of violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection (defamation) was added to the female BJ who mentioned Mr. A on an Internet broadcast.

However, Mr. Ko has not responded to the investigation for three months now. He disappeared after receiving money from the bereaved family. For this reason, the investigation into suspicions of manipulated broadcasts has also been halted. Seocho Station in Seoul is in a situation where a female BJ and others are being investigated in relation to allegations of defamation. Because of Mr. Go’s disappearance, the investigation into Mr. Park, a key figure, has not been carried out. Regarding this, an official from Seochoseo said, “It is difficult to explain the detailed investigation situation as the case is currently under investigation.”
