Born in 1916 as the second son of an ordinary farmer’s family in Fuqing, China, Suduno Salim moved to Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, Indonesia, in 1938, when he was 22, and joined his brothers and relatives. After initially starting the peanut oil business, the business grew rapidly by trading cloves, which are used in cigarettes. Sudono Salim had a fateful meeting with Suharto while he was serving as the regional commander in Central Java Province in the late 1950s, and earned his trust by supplying consumables to military units.

Now Salim Group, led by Chairman Antonio Salim, is transforming into a finance, distribution, communications, and technology company. Due to recent changes in industrial structure, it is not the largest company in Indonesia, but it is still going strong. Salim Group’s most representative brand is Indomie, an instant noodle, and it holds a 50.5% stake in PT Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk, the world’s largest company in the industry. It owns Indomaret, a convenience store with about 20,000 stores nationwide. It is also expanding its business into the e-commerce market, and in 2017, Salim Group acquired a 51% stake in Bank Ina Perdana and expanded its business into the financial industry, reliving its past glory.
