Zelensky: “After the war, I went to Hollywood… “I am not dictator Putin”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appeared in the British BBC documentary ‘The Zelensky Story’. BBC file photoUkrainian President Volomidyr Zelenskiy, who went from a promising comedian to president, hinted that he would return to the life of a comedian after the war.
According to local British media, President Zelensky expressed this in the BBC documentary ‘The Zelensky Story’, which is scheduled to be aired on the 4th (local time).
President Zelensky told director Michael Waldman, who visited Ukraine several times to film documentaries, that “I am not Putin” and that he pursues a life as a “natural person” rather than a “dictator.”
When asked whether he would still be in power in 25 years, he said, “I am not Putin. “Trust me,” he explained, “I’m just doing the best I can to help Ukraine.”
The question about ‘remaining in power after 25 years’ is indirectly aimed at Russian President Vladimir Putin’s long-term rule. President Putin has remained in power for over 25 years since taking over as acting president following the resignation of former President Boris Yeltsin in 1999.
President Zelensky also responded to the famous Hollywood actor Sean Penn giving him an Oscar trophy, saying, “I promised to return the trophy to Penn someday.” “He promised to go to Hollywood and give it back,” he added.
Sean Penn, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor twice, handed his Oscar trophy to President Zelenskyy during his visit to Ukraine in 2022, saying it was “a sign of faith in victory.”
The British media said that the trophy given by Penn was placed on a display shelf in President Zelenskyy’s office between models of battleships and fighter jets, and that it fit perfectly with his life as a comedian-turned-president fighting a war.
Born in 1978 to a family of Jewish scholars in Kryvyrikh, central Ukraine, President Zelensky is the youngest Ukrainian president to have a comedian background.
He chose to become a comedian after completing a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in law at the National University of Economics in Chiiu. In the 2015 drama ‘Servant of the People,’ President Zelensky played the role of a high school history teacher who unexpectedly became president and eradicated corruption in the political world. Thanks to his popularity, President Zelenskyy was elected with an overwhelming vote rate of 73% in 2019.
Even in the first days of his administration, he was labeled an ‘incompetent president.’ However, he highlighted the aspect of a ‘war hero’ starting with the invasion of Russia. When selecting President Zelenskyy as the ‘Person of the Year’ in 2022, the American current affairs magazine Time praised him, saying, “He moved the world in a way that has never been seen in the past decades.”
