Scientists officially acknowledge existence of caves on the moonScientists identify first lunar cave that could help protect astronauts from lunar temperatures

Scientists have already theorized the existence of lunar caves. And an international team of researchers has discovered the first evidence that the deepest pit on the moon is connected to a cave.

The newly discovered cave is at least 45 meters (nearly 148 feet) wide and between 30 and 80 meters (98 feet and 262 feet) long, and may be the initial part of a longer tube cavity formed by lava and yet to be discovered. There are likely more caves, researchers said.

The lunar cave is expected to be of great help to future lunar exploration as it can protect astronauts from the extreme environment of the moon.
