On the 23rd, Judge Kim Jung-hyun of the Daejeon District Court sentenced A44 to one year in prison and two years of probation on charges of fraud and violating the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act.
A is suspected of stealing the difference worth 1.25 million won on 25 occasions by selling medicines more expensive than the market price, such as selling a painkiller, a mask, and a half warehouse for 50,000 won each while operating a pharmacy in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon in 2021.
Mr. A, who was handed over to trial, admitted to the charges, but insisted that he was mentally and physically weak, saying he was suffering from bipolar affective disorder. However, the court did not accept his claim, judging that the crime was committed for a long time and that Mr. A was capable of discriminating or making decisions.
The court said, “This case caused social controversy to the extent that it was broadcasted, damaging the trust in the pharmacist,” adding, “However, we considered the fact that the defendant’s mental illness partially affected the crime, that he is currently receiving treatment, and that the entire amount of damage was criminally deposited.”
