As the law is being revised to allow early morning delivery by large supermarkets, the small business industry is strongly opposing it. Although it is said to be an easing of regulations to keep Coupang in check, there are concerns that street shops and traditional markets could take a direct hit. The small business industry plans to take strong action, including filing a constitutional appeal, if early morning delivery at large supermarkets is allowed.
Regarding the government’s position that this deregulation is a measure to prevent Coupang’s monopoly, he said, “It is like burning down all that straw to get rid of bedbugs. It is clear that supporting and fostering traditional supermarkets and traditional markets is the most powerful means to combat early morning delivery of online platforms.”
