According to the National Life-Sustaining Treatment Management Agency on the 19th, the number of people who registered an ‘advance directive for life-sustaining treatment’ not to receive life-sustaining treatment was 3,201,958 as of December last year.

Among those who registered advance directives, there were 1,079,173 men and 2,122,785 women, which is about twice as many women as men.

By age, people in their 70s were the largest with 1,246,047 people, followed by those aged 65 to 69 with 563,863 people, and those aged 80 or older with 563,655 people, with a total of 2,373,565 people aged 65 or older.

This figure corresponds to 23.7% of the approximately 10 million people aged 65 or older in Korea.

An advance directive for life-sustaining treatment is a document in which the intention for life-sustaining treatment is written in advance in preparation for future death. Any adult over the age of 19 can visit a designated registration agency nationwide and receive an explanation before signing.

In 2018, the first year in which the so-called ‘Death with Dignity Act’ (Life-Sustaining Treatment Decision Act) was implemented and the life-sustaining treatment decision system was introduced, the number of registrants started with about 86,000, and participation gradually increased thereafter.

I felt very strange when an adult in this family suddenly said, ‘I applied for that too,’ while watching the news.
