Shimane Prefecture claimed, “The two families engaged in sea lion hunting and abalone fishing on Dokdo and Ulleungdo with permission from the shogunate,” and “(These documents) are historical evidence showing that Takeshima has been a stage of Japanese activity since ancient times.”

The two maps released together were privately owned and purchased by Shimane Prefecture. In particular, the ‘Matsushima Map’ on which Dokdo is drawn is believed to have been produced in the late 17th to early 18th century. It records in detail not only the geographical shape of Takeshima but also the distance information to the Oki Islands in present-day Shimane Prefecture. Shimane Prefecture explained, “There is a record of this map being displayed at the Yonago City San’in History Museum in 1987, but its whereabouts became unclear after that, and this time it was purchased from an individual.”
