Recently, a large amount of a new drug, ketamine, was discovered in tea bags on the coast of Jeju Island.

The number of smuggling so-called ‘club drugs’, including ketamine, illegally distributed in clubs and entertainment establishments, has increased more than seven-fold over the past five years.

The main shipping country is Europe, and it appears that Korea has become a new target for international drug organizations.

When the customs officer opens the suitcase, suspicious bags come out.

“”What is so black? Something is strange.””

When I opened the bag, what came out was none other than drugs.

24kg of ketamine, known as a ‘club drug’, was discovered, an amount that could be used by 800,000 people at the same time.

Last year, another traveler’s bag contained a pile of ketamine disguised as a bath salt.

Recently, the smuggling of so-called ‘club drugs’ such as ketamine and ecstasy has been noticeably increasing.

Over the past five years, the number of detections has decreased, but the amount seized has increased 7.3 times from 15.8 kg to 115.9 kg.

This means that the scale of smuggling is increasing.

The amount detected this year is enough to administer medication to 2.32 million people at the same time.

In particular, the increase in ketamine was noticeable among ‘club drugs’.

The amount seized this year alone was 101.9 kg, a 17.3-fold increase over the past 5 years, and the number of smuggling cases detected also increased 15-fold.

More than 90% of ketamine arrived via express cargo and traveler’s baggage, and the main shipping country was Europe.

The Korea Customs Service plans to intensively inspect criminal travelers and express cargo as the increase in club drug smuggling is highly likely to lead to increased demand among young people.

We also plan to strengthen our cooperation system with major drug sending countries.

As can be seen from the conclusion of the Burning Sun incident, it is highly likely that a specific cartel with power and financial resources is leading the distribution of drugs.

The reason why drugs manufactured in Europe, China, and South America can enter and be distributed in Korea is because someone within Korea opened the door.

Of course, we need to work hard at customs and on-site crackdowns, but in order to fundamentally eradicate the drug problem, the fight against Korean drug cartels is inevitable.
