On December 19, 2025 (local time), a jury in Minnesota, USA, awarded Johnson & Johnson $65.5 million (approximately KRW 97 billion) in compensation in a lawsuit filed by a woman who had used Johnson & Johnson baby powder for a long period of time since childhood, alleging that she developed malignant pleural cancer due to exposure to asbestos.

The product in question is ‘Johnson’s Baby Powder’, which has been sold around the world for decades.

This product is used for the purpose of preventing baby diaper rash and keeping the skin soft, and has long contained talc as its main ingredient.

However, talc is known to be a mineral that can exist in nature along with asbestos, a carcinogen, and the key issue in the lawsuit was the possibility that fine powder generated during the use of the powder may have been inhaled or accumulated in the body through the respiratory tract and caused cancer.
