Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 15th that it has obtained conceptual design certification for ‘FSMR’, a floating floating small modular reactor (SMR) platform equipped with two ‘SMART 100’ units, from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

FSMR is a general-purpose platform capable of mounting various types of SMR by applying a ‘compartmental design’ that separates nuclear reactors and power generation facilities by function. Samsung Heavy Industries was responsible for integrating SMR and floating body and developing a containment vessel, and Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute performed the task of converting SMART 100 for land use to marine use.

Article content: Floating Offshore Power Platform

FSMR (Floating SMR), developed by Samsung Heavy Industries, is a floating offshore nuclear power generation platform equipped with a small nuclear reactor, and its purpose is to stably supply power to islands and military bases with insufficient power grids. This platform is mounted on ships and moves to places where power is needed, and can be equipped with various types of SMRs by applying a compartmental design that separates nuclear reactors and power generation facilities by function.

Difference between SMR and nuclear submarine

SMR technology can also be used to develop nuclear submarines, but the purposes and designs are different. Commercial SMRs can maintain stable output on land, but reactors for nuclear submarines must be much more durable as the operating environment of the reactor can change rapidly during rapid acceleration, sudden stop, and rotation. Additionally, while nuclear reactors with an electrical output of 50 to 60 MW are suitable for nuclear submarines, the SMART 100 in this article is designed for power generation with a power output of 110 MW.
