From 1991 to 2017, American photographer Deanna Dikeman quietly took pictures of her parents seeing them off every time they left home. What started out as a casual snapshot later became a ritual she performed every time she drove home. She later named this series ‘Leaving and Waving.’ This work is a documentary that records family, aging, and the pain of separation that inevitably comes to all of us from a tender perspective. In 2009, my father passed away shortly after his 91st birthday, and in 2017, my mother passed away. In the last photo of this series, only an empty driveway remains. Because for the first time in her life, there was no one left to wave on her way out.
