After the conclusion of the Joseon-British Mutual Trade Treaty in 1883
The British used a hanok in Seoul as a legation, but demolished it and rebuilt it as a Western-style building in 1891.
Britain continued to use this building as a consulate during the Japanese colonial period after the Japan-Korea Treaty, but after liberation it used it again as a legation and upgraded it to an embassy in 1957.
The embassy residence is still used for various events and ceremonies and is the only diplomatic mission built during the Joseon Dynasty.
