Korean health insurance is a loss for the middle class and above.

Korea is a medical paradise and the best country. Overseas Koreans also come to Korea for treatment. That’s true to some extent. In particular, Koreans are frustrated with public healthcare systems like Canada and the UK that gatekeep home doctors. Even if the symptoms are severe, you need a home doctor referral to get an MRI/CT, and you have to wait without knowing what stage it is or how long it will take.

But even if you are middle class, the American medical system is fine. The problem with American medical care that is highlighted in documentaries like Sicko is the lack of access to medical care for people with low income or below the median income. Basically, it is expensive in the United States because the private sector has the power to determine prices.

However, for civil servants or people with decent jobs, it is actually better than in Korea. You can get surgery as quickly as in Korea, and the insurance coverage for new drugs is much wider than that of Korean health insurance. Above all, it is cheaper to sign up for expensive premium insurance in the United States than to get ripped off in Korea.
