Aftermath of the chicken game, chronicle of Samsung and LG’s current situation

– The ‘chicken game’ has been a guarantee of victory for Korean companies so far, but it only worked against Japan and Taiwan, and they lost consecutive games against China.

– The LCD panel business, which was Korea’s cash cow, was eventually sold to Chinese companies after losing out in a game of chicken with China.

– As soon as Chinese companies monopolize the LCD panel business, they immediately start playing around, raising the price of LCD panels and, above all, starting to supply them to domestic TV companies at lower prices.

– Samel, which is already fighting a tough battle with Chinese TV companies, is being pushed further into a crisis situation due to rising component prices.

– Korean companies have made a big bet on OLED TV, but contrary to expectations, LCD TV is still the mainstream in the TV market, and OLED is lagging.  The outlook for OLED TV next year is also dim.

– Moreover, mini-LED, which SamEL underestimated, is rapidly replacing OLED in the premium TV market as Chinese companies are rapidly lowering the price through large-scale investments.

– With Mini LED TV as their weapon, Chinese companies TCL and Hisense have pushed out LG to 4th place and settled in 2nd and 3rd place in the global TV market, and are chasing Samsung, which is in first place.

– In fact, Korean TV companies are helpless and have no alternative.

There seems to be no answer… Chinese companies benefit from subsidies from the Chinese government…
