It’s been a week since the Ukrainian military launched a surprise attack on the Russian mainland.
While President Putin personally presided over the meeting and instructed to “drive out the enemy,” the Ukrainian military claimed that the territory it had already controlled was about 1,000 square kilometers.
With Russia left confused by Ukraine’s surprise attack, the war appears to have entered a new phase.
With Russia struggling, President Putin held a meeting on the border situation in Novo-Ogaryovo, a suburb of Moscow.
Kursk region’s acting governor Smirnov reported that Ukraine had entered 12km into Russian territory along a 40km front.
He explained that the situation was difficult, saying that the Ukrainian military was controlling 28 villages and more than 120,000 people had been evacuated.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces also claimed at a staff meeting that “we currently control approximately 1,000 square kilometers of Russian Federation territory.”
