Group infection of whooping cough at a middle school in Jeju… 2 patients, 44 contacts

()

Jeju Island announced on the 21st that it is conducting an epidemiological investigation after two cases of whooping cough occurred at a middle school in the province.

Whooping cough is an acute respiratory infectious disease classified as a second-grade infectious disease, and symptoms include coughing for more than two weeks accompanied by seizures and vomiting. The younger you are, the more vulnerable you are to infection, and especially infants under 3 months old or children with certain diseases require hospitalization in severe cases.

The first patient at the middle school was confirmed positive on the 18th, and one additional patient occurred on the 19th, classified as the first group infection case of the year.

The province classified a total of 44 people, including 5 family members living together, as contacts and provided prevention guidelines. Family members living with the patient have completed preventive antibiotic treatment, and other contacts have been advised to seek medical care if symptoms occur. Additionally, monitoring will begin for 3 weeks from the date of last contact.
