1. Homeplus was brought to trial on charges of selling personal information written on entry tickets to insurance companies while conducting a sweepstakes event from 2011 to 2014.
(It is said that about 24 million pieces of personal information were sold and about 23 billion won was taken.)
2. The entry ticket used at the time of the sweepstakes had “Provision of information for insurance marketing” written in 1mm font size and asked to place a checkmark next to it for consent.
3. In the first and second trials, the case was acquitted if the person could read it sufficiently, but the Supreme Court ruled that the case be retried, saying that it is difficult to accept the 1mm font size of the phrase asking for consent to use personal information in terms of social norms.
4. In the 2018 remand trial, the ruling was overturned and the CEO was sentenced to 10 months in prison with 2 years of probation, and the five executives and employees who were also indicted were also sentenced to suspended sentences.
