3-step summary: Cause → Trigger → Effect
1) Cause (Why)
The power vacuum grew under the young King Danjong’s regime, and Prince Suyang took power through force/purges (1453).
Following Seonwi (1455), as the controversy over the legitimacy of the royal line and the backlash against the ‘six article direct succession system’ grew, the loyalty and cause of Jiphyeonjeon scholars gathered together to “make Danjong king again.”
2) Trigger
The restoration faction, centered around Jiphyeonjeon Haksa, prepared for specific implementation steps with the goal of removing King Sejo and reinstating King Danjong (1456). However, as internal information leaked and the scandal was discovered, the rebellion collapsed ‘just before execution.’
3) Outcome
Due to the failure of the rebellion, the leaders were executed and related forces were widely suppressed. King Danjong was further isolated, and the tragedy was eventually confirmed with the death of King Sukjong (1457). However, as he was recognized and revered in later generations (during the reign of Sukjong), the historical evaluation was solidified as a “loyal subject” narrative.
